VTM GO
PROJECT: TELEVISION APPLICATION
VTM GO is the largest free streaming platform in Flanders. I worked as UX Designer in the development squad. We aimed to create a consistent experience accross all devices. One project to highlight is the development of the television application for Apple TV and Android TV. The design track was fully led and executed by me.
ROLE
Working in a development squad as UX designer, I was to be the bridge between the business stakeholders and the development team. For the design of the television application I was responsible for the entire design process, from concept and research phase to UI design.
DESIGN PROCESS
I started this project with gathering the requirements from all business stakeholders and performing research on design for television screens. Based on the input I already made high level wireframes. I used these in workshops to get everyone on the same page. When we got everything clear for everyone, it was my task to create the prototype. On this prototype I executed several usabililty tests to validate our design desicions. Taking all findings into account, I designed the interface and worked closely together with the development team to review the implementations.
KEY INSIGHTS
Designing for tv apps implies some additional design rules. The navigation via the remote is limited and the interface needs to allow the user to still easily get to the content despite this limitation. On every screen we had to think about the paths users need to go throug using the remote and optimizing the screens in funtion of these paths. The location of the menu is also important, we moved the menubar to the left side of the screen, so it is always easily accessible. Next to that, there are also extra states that have to be taken into account, because items can be on focus or not on focus and in both cases they can be selected or not selected. In deliberation with the developers we made some changes between the two tv apps, to get the optimal experience on each operation system.
